How to Connect AWS EC2 Instance using PuTTY

In this tutorial, we will demonstrate a step by step guide to connect AWS EC2 instance using Putty.

PuTTY is most popular free SSH and Telnet client, developed originally by Simon Tatham for the Windows platform.

PuTTY communication is established over a TCP/IP socket, such as TTY, but it uses the secure socket with public key encryption.

Install PuTTY on Windows

Step 1: Open PuTTY download portal, download the latest version of PuTTY and install on your machine.

Step 2: Upon installation, open command prompt and type putty. The command will open PuTTY.

Alternatively, you can simply type PuTTY in windows search bar and open the PuTTY.

Connect AWS EC2 Instance using PuTTY

Step 1: Open AWS Management console, navigate to Instances and click on instance which you want to connect.

From the details dashboard, copy either Public IPv4 address or Public IPv4 DNS and make sure your key (pem/ppk file) matches your key pair name.

Here is our download pem file,

ppk file name

Step 2: Open PuTTY,

  1. Set Host : Public IPv4 address or Public IPv4 DNS in the host.
  2. Port : 22

Next,

  1. Expand SSH
  2. Click on Auth
  3. Browse the pem/ppk file
ssh authentication

That’s simple! Now click on open and you will be connected to your EC2 instance as shown below,

That’s cool! but what about username and the password?

Did you observe that we have already provided the username in the host[email protected], where ec2-user is the username.

Password, we have authenticated using the private key, so no need to pass the password.

Here is default username for different Amazon Machine Images(AMI),

AMI Type Username
Amazon Linux ec2-user
Ubuntu ubuntu
RHEL5 root or ec2-user
Fedora fedora or ec2-user
SUSE Linux root or ec2-user
